When the Thrush Knocks

When the Thrush Knocks

“Stand by the grey stone when the thrush knocks, and the setting sun with the last light of Durin’s Day will shine upon the key-hole.”

-J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit

I’ve always loved the role that the thrush plays in the Hobbit, and I’ve been looking for a good way to incorporate all the related symbolism into one art piece. When the movies came out, the portrayal of the dwarf Dwalin as a tough, tattooed badass got me wondering what other tattoos he might have. If I were him, the thrush would be top of my list.

If you’d like to see this on a shirt, please vote for it over at Threadless. Thanks!

Heavy Lies the Crown – Laser Etched Skate Deck

Heavy Lies the Crown - Laser Etched Skate Deck

I had Kurt over at KARVT do a laser etched version of Heave Lies the Crown. It turned out PHENOMENAL. Seriously, my mind is blown. He’s running a contest for one over at his instagram, open for the next couple days.

I might do some more of these and put them up in my store if theres some interest…

Forest of the Nautilus

I did this for Carmannah Boutique in British Columbia. They had me do a few designs featuring native wildlife and folktales.

And I Float Away…

This is sort of a response to some health problems I was having over spring and early summer this year.
After a long flight, I had chronic dizziness for over a month so I went in to see my doctor. After a few visits, they found an unrelated issue. I had been having terrible back pain during the night, and was ignoring it as untreatable back pain. Turns out that I have been living with and inflamed and clogged gall bladder for over two years. I had surgery to have my gall bladder removed in July, and my health is so much better now for it. 120% of what I used to be.

I was working on this piece throughout this whole ordeal, and I hope that some of that shows though, albeit symbolically.
